Frequently Asked Questions

What are UTM parameters?
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags added to a URL that help Google Analytics and other analytics tools track where traffic comes from. The five standard parameters are utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content.
Which UTM parameters are required?
Only utm_source is technically required, but best practice is to always include utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign. These three together give you a complete picture of traffic source, marketing channel, and campaign name.
What is the difference between utm_source and utm_medium?
utm_source identifies where the traffic comes from (e.g. google, facebook, newsletter). utm_medium identifies the marketing channel or type of link (e.g. cpc, email, social, banner). Together they tell you 'from where' and 'how'.
Can I generate multiple campaign URLs at once?
Yes. Switch to Bulk Mode to enter multiple URLs or multiple source/medium combinations and generate all campaign URLs at once. Results can be copied as a list or downloaded as CSV.
Does this tool shorten the generated URL?
The tool doesn't connect to shortening services, but it provides the full tagged URL ready to paste into any URL shortener like Bitly, TinyURL, or your own shortener.
Are my URLs stored anywhere?
No. All URL building happens locally in your browser. No URLs, campaign data, or analytics information is sent to any server. Your saved presets are stored in your browser's local storage only.
What is utm_content used for?
utm_content is used to differentiate between multiple links in the same campaign that point to the same URL. For example, if you have two different banner ads in the same email, utm_content lets you track which one was clicked (e.g. 'header_banner' vs 'footer_link').
