About Cubic Weight / Volumetric Weight Calculator

Almost every surprise on a freight invoice traces back to the same thing: the shipper costed the shipment on the weight their scales showed, and the carrier billed on the space the boxes occupied. Cubic weight — volumetric or dimensional weight — is how carriers convert size into a billable weight figure, and it is the number that actually determines your bill whenever your cargo is lighter than the space it fills.

This calculator handles it properly for every convention that matters. How to Use

  1. Choose your unit system. Centimetres and kilograms, or inches and pounds — the calculator handles the conversions and applies the correct divisor family for each.
  2. Enter each carton type. Length, width, height, actual gross weight per piece and quantity. Use the dimensions of the packed and sealed carton, including any protrusions.
  3. Add the pallet if you are palletising. Enable pallet mode and enter the base height and any overhang, because carriers measure the loaded pallet rather than the cartons.
  4. Set the rounding rules. Match them to your carrier’s tariff. When in doubt, assume they round up — most do.
  5. Read the per-carrier table. Compare cubic weight and chargeable weight across services, and note which are volume-driven for your cargo.
  6. Check the density verdict. If you are below break-even, packaging is your lever. If above, consolidation or mode change is.
  7. Model a packaging change. Reduce a dimension and watch the chargeable weight fall. This is usually the cheapest saving available and it applies to every future shipment.

Examples

Example 1 — The classic low-density parcel. A carton 60 x 40 x 50 cm weighing 8 kg. Volume is 120,000 cubic centimetres, so cubic weight is 24 kg on the 5000 divisor and 20 kg on 6000. You are billed on 24 kg against 8 kg actual — three times your real weight, and 16 kg of it is air. At a density of 67 kg per cubic metre, against a break-even of 200, no rate negotiation will fix this. Reducing height to 30 cm takes cubic weight to 14.4 kg.

Example 2 — Divisor makes the difference. The same carton at 5000 bills at 24 kg; on a negotiated 6000 divisor it bills at 20 kg. That is a 17 percent reduction in chargeable weight on identical freight, achieved purely by a contract term. For a shipper moving consistently low-density goods, the divisor is often more valuable than the headline rate per kilogram.

Example 3 — Per-piece versus per-shipment. Two cartons: one 30 x 30 x 30 cm at 15 kg (dense), one 60 x 50 x 40 cm at 5 kg (light). Per piece, the dense carton bills at its 15 kg actual and the light one at 24 kg cubic, totalling 39 kg. On a consignment basis, total volume gives 29.4 kg cubic against 20 kg actual, so you bill on 29.4 kg. Same freight, nearly 10 kg difference, decided entirely by which basis the carrier uses.

Example 4 — Rounding at the threshold. A carton designed at 40.3 x 30.2 x 25.1 cm is measured as 41 x 31 x 26 cm, giving 33,046 cubic centimetres instead of 30,556 — an 8 percent penalty for three millimetres of overhang. Trimming the design under the whole-centimetre boundary recovers all of it, on every carton, forever.

What is cubic weight and why do carriers use it?
Cubic weight — also called volumetric or dimensional weight — is a weight figure derived from a package’s size rather than its mass. Carriers use it because vehicles run out of space long before they run out of lifting capacity. A van filled with pillows weighs almost nothing but is completely full, and if it were billed on actual weight the carrier would earn a trivial sum for a full vehicle. Charging on the greater of actual and cubic weight makes revenue track the resource genuinely being consumed, which is space.
What is the formula?
Length times width times height, divided by a divisor set by the carrier. In metric, dimensions in centimetres divided by 5000 gives kilograms for most international express services, while 6000 is the IATA air-freight standard. In imperial, inches cubed divided by 139 gives pounds for US domestic express, with 166 applying to some services. The divisor is a commercial choice, not a law of physics, so the same box produces different cubic weights at different carriers.
Which divisor applies to my shipment?
It depends on the carrier and the service, and it is written in your contract or tariff. As a general guide: DHL, FedEx and UPS international express commonly use 5000 metric, US domestic express commonly uses 139 imperial, IATA air freight uses 6000, sea LCL treats one cubic metre as one tonne, and European road groupage typically converts one cubic metre to 333 kilograms. Negotiated contracts frequently improve the divisor, so a 6000 divisor on an express account is worth asking for — it reduces cubic weight by 17 percent on the same box.
What is chargeable weight?
The greater of actual gross weight and cubic weight, after the carrier’s rounding rules are applied. That is the figure your rate per kilogram is multiplied by. If a carton is 12 kg actual and 21 kg cubic, you pay on 21 kg and the extra 9 kg is entirely a function of the box being larger than its contents need.
Is cubic weight calculated per piece or per shipment?
It varies, and the difference is real money. Most express carriers calculate dimensional weight per piece, then sum the chargeable weights. Air freight consolidators and many forwarders total the volume of the whole consignment first and compare it against total gross weight. Per-piece billing is usually more expensive, because a dense carton in the same shipment cannot offset a light bulky one. How does rounding affect the bill?
More than most shippers realise. Many carriers round every dimension up to the next whole centimetre or inch before calculating, then round the resulting chargeable weight up to the next half or whole kilogram. On a single parcel that is pennies; across a thousand identical cartons it compounds into a meaningful number. It also means a carton measuring 40.2 cm is billed as 41 cm, so trimming a design to a whole number below the threshold captures a genuine saving.
What is break-even density?
The density at which actual weight and cubic weight are equal, so neither penalises you. On a 5000 divisor it is 200 kilograms per cubic metre; on 6000 it is 166.7; on sea LCL it is 1000. Below that figure your shipment is volume-driven and you are paying for air. Above it you are weight-driven and using the space efficiently. Knowing your density and the break-even for your service tells you immediately whether packaging or consolidation is the lever worth pulling.
How do I actually reduce cubic weight?
Shrink the box, not the product. Remove unnecessary void space and oversized outer cartons, right-size to the product rather than to a standard box range, reduce internal packaging bulk where protection allows, nest or knock down items, and avoid cartons whose dimensions fall just above a whole-unit rounding threshold. The calculator shows the saving from any dimensional change directly, and packaging changes usually outperform rate negotiation for low-density freight.
Does a pallet change the calculation?
Yes — you must include the pallet in the dimensions and the weight. Cubic weight is calculated on the outer dimensions of the loaded pallet including any overhang, and carriers measure the largest footprint rather than the neat cartons inside. Pallet height includes the pallet base itself, typically 14 to 15 centimetres, which is why palletised freight often has worse density than the cartons alone suggest.
Are these figures exact?
The arithmetic is exact and deterministic — the divisors and rounding rules are applied precisely as specified. The divisors themselves are published industry conventions that carriers can and do change, and negotiated accounts often differ, so confirm yours against your contract or current tariff before relying on a quote.
