Frequently Asked Questions

What is a git alias?
A shortcut stored in the [alias] section of your .gitconfig that turns long commands into short ones, for example co checkouts, br branches, and lg pretty logs.
How should I use the output?
Run each git config --global alias.NAME "command" line, or paste the whole [alias] block into ~/.gitconfig. The generator emits both formats.
Are the aliases overwriting anything?
Only the ones you choose. The output only includes the aliases you tick, so existing ones elsewhere in your config stay untouched.
What does the lg pretty log include?
A compact one-line-per-commit graph with short hashes, decorate refs, and relative dates, colorized by default.
Can aliases run shell commands?
Yes — aliases starting with ! run in the shell. The generator includes a couple of examples marked clearly so you can use them safely.
Is this platform-specific?
No. The generated commands are plain git config calls that work on macOS, Linux, and Windows (Git for Windows). Shell aliases assume a bash-style shell.
Do I get the commands as well as the block?
Yes. Toggle "show config commands" to prepend git config --global alias.NAME "..." lines for every selected alias.
Is my config uploaded?
No. Everything is assembled locally in your browser and copied or downloaded as a text file.
