How to Use

  1. Pick the unit system. Feet/inches or metres for all window dimensions and the price per area.
  2. Set the edge clearance. Keep the default or match your glazing allowance for a true cut size.

Examples

Example 1 - Picture window. A fixed window 6 ft wide by 4 ft high, one pane of 6 mm float: area 24 sq ft, weight about 67 kg (24 ft2 x 6 mm x ~0.51 kg/ft2/mm) before waste.

Example 2 - Sash window. Two sashes in one rough opening, each 2.5 x 4 ft (10 sq ft each), 4 mm float: 20 sq ft total, roughly 23 kg and a modest cost for a standard lite.

Example 3 - Patio door. A sliding door with two lites of 3 x 6.5 ft each in 6 mm tempered: 39 sq ft and the doubled price factor of tempered glass, weight near 109 kg - a two-person lift.

Example 4 - Triple entry area. Front door (3 x 7 ft) plus two sidelights (1.5 x 7 ft each) at 6 mm low-E: 42 sq ft with the low-E cost factor, over 117 kg of strengthened glass.

Example 5 - Bathroom obscure. A 3 x 4 ft privacy lite in 4 mm laminated (one layer obscured): 12 sq ft, thin, tough and heavier than plain float of the same size.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure a window for glass?
Measure the clear opening width and height the new glass must cover, then subtract a small clearance so the pane can shift during fitting and expansion. The calculator applies a configurable edge clearance per side and reports the true glass size.
How much does window glass weigh?
Glass weighs about 2.5 kg per square metre per millimetre of thickness. A 6 mm pane of 1 square metre weighs about 15 kg; an insulated double-glazed unit with two 6 mm panes weighs about 30 kg per square metre. The calculator converts the total to weight.
Which glass thickness should I use?
Residential windows commonly use 3–6 mm float. Large panes, doors, sidelights and balustrades go heavier (6–12 mm) or must be strengthened. The right thickness depends on pane size, wind load, deflection limits and local code - larger glass needs thicker or tempered lites.
When is tempered or laminated glass required?
Most building codes require safety glass (tempered or laminated) in hazardous locations: doors, sidelights within 24 inches of a door, glass within 18 inches of the floor in a walkway, showers and large panes where someone could fall into them. What is the difference between double glazing and a single pane?
A double-glazed (insulated) unit has two panes separated by a sealed air or gas gap. It has roughly twice the glass weight and far better insulation. The calculator models it as two panes for both weight and cost.
Why does the calculator add waste?
Cutting, rounding and edge losses mean you order more glass than the neat area. A 5–10 percent allowance keeps the order honest, especially for drilled or shaped lites. Adjust it to your confidence.
How do I estimate the cost of window glass?
Glass is usually quoted per square foot or square metre and the price rises steeply with thickness and processing. The calculator multiplies your total area by the per-area price and a type factor so float, low-E and thermal units compare on the same job.
What counts as the glass area for a window?
Each pane is width times height. For a window with two operable sashes, add the two pane areas; for a fixed picture window, it is the single opening. The calculator sums every entry, with a quantity multiplier per window.
Does this size the frame or the glass?
It sizes the glass for the revealed opening. Full new-construction window dimensions depend on the frame, jamb and trim; existing-opening replacements measure the daylight opening instead of the full unit.
