Frequently Asked Questions

How do roman numerals work?
Seven symbols encode all values: I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000. Symbols add when a smaller value follows a larger one (VI = 6), and subtract when a smaller value precedes a larger one (IV = 4). The subtraction rule is what makes 4 "IV" instead of "IIII".
Why are 4 and 9 written with subtraction?
Because a repeated symbol is limited: I, X, C and M can repeat at most three times. So 4 cannot be "IIII" and becomes "IV" - one less than five. The same rule produces IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900).
