Brickwork is one of the oldest and most reliable forms of construction, but estimating the right quantity of bricks, mortar and cost is surprisingly fiddly. Get the count wrong and you either over-order (tying up cash in surplus stock) or under-order (halting work while waiting for a fresh delivery). The Brick Calculator solves this by applying the standard wall-area method — multiplying the net wall area by the number of bricks needed per square metre — and adds the mortar and cost breakdowns on top so you have a complete order list in one pass.

The wall-area method for brick estimation has been in use since the early 20th century and is still the standard approach in modern quantity surveying. The formula is straightforward: bricks needed = net wall area × bricks per m² × (1 + waste factor). The bricks-per-m² figure depends on the brick size and the mortar joint thickness — a modular brick (194×92×57 mm) with a 10 mm joint occupies 200×100 mm of wall face, giving 50 bricks per m² for a single-wythe (100 mm thick) wall. A UK standard brick (215×102.5×65) with a 10 mm joint occupies 225×112.5 mm of face, giving about 39.5 bricks per m².
For multi-wythe walls, multiply the per-m² count by the number of wythes. A 9" full-brick wall (two wythes) uses twice the bricks of a 4.5" half-brick wall. Mortar volume is the difference between the wall volume and the brick volume: mortar = wall volume − (number of bricks × brick volume). For 1 m² of single-wythe modular brick wall, the wall volume is 0.1 m³, the brick volume is 50 × 0.001017 = 0.0509 m³, giving a mortar volume of about 0.049 m³ per m².
To convert wet mortar volume to dry materials, multiply by 1.33 (the standard dry-volume factor that accounts for the void space between sand particles). For a 1:6 mix, the cement fraction is 1/7 of the dry volume and the sand fraction is 6/7. Cement density is 1,440 kg/m³ and a bag weighs 50 kg, giving 28.8 bags per m³ of pure cement volume. Sand density is 1,600 kg/m³ dry. The total cost is the sum of (bricks × price/brick) + (cement bags × price/bag) + (sand m³ × price/m³).

Step by step
- Pick your unit system. Metric (m, m²) or Imperial (ft, ft²) — all calculations update instantly when you switch.
- Enter wall dimensions. Wall length, wall height, and wall thickness (4.5", 9" or 13.5" for the most common cases).
- Pick a brick size preset. Modular, UK Standard, US Standard, Australian, German, or Custom if your brick doesn't match a preset.

Worked examples
Example 1 — A simple garden wall. A 10 m long, 1.8 m high, 4.5" thick garden wall using UK standard bricks. Gross area: 18 m². No openings. With 5% waste, the calculator gives you about 945 bricks, 6 bags of cement, 0.55 m³ of sand — and a cost figure based on the prices you enter.
Example 2 — A house external wall. A 12 m long, 3 m high, 9" thick wall with two windows (1.2×1.2 m) and one door (0.9×2.1 m). Gross area: 36 m². Deductions: 2 × 1.44 + 1.89 = 4.77 m². Net area: 31.23 m². With 10% waste, you need roughly 3,440 bricks, 22 bags of cement and 1.8 m³ of sand for a 1:5 mortar mix.
Example 3 — A complex elevation. A 25 m long, 6 m high wall with eight windows, two doors, and a decorative Flemish bond pattern. Flemish bond adds about 8% more bricks than stretcher bond, so the calculator's base count is adjusted automatically. With 12% waste and the openings deducted, you typically end up with 8,500 to 9,000 bricks and 55 to 60 bags of cement.
Example 4 — Pointing-only repair. Switch the mix ratio to 1:3 (pointing mix), enter the wall area of just the joints, and the calculator gives you the cement and sand for repointing an existing wall without re-counting the bricks themselves.
Example 5 — Comparing two brick standards. Run the calculation with US Modular (194×92×57) and then again with UK Standard (215×102.5×65). The UK brick is larger, so you need fewer bricks per m² but more mortar per brick. Use the side-by-side comparison to decide which is more economical for your supplier's pricing.
