About Brick Calculator (Quantity by Wall Area)

Brickwork is one of the oldest and most reliable forms of construction, but estimating the right quantity of bricks, mortar and cost is surprisingly fiddly. Get the count wrong and you either over-order (tying up cash in surplus stock) or under-order (halting work while waiting for a fresh delivery). The Brick Calculator solves this by applying the standard wall-area method — multiplying the net wall area by the number of bricks needed per square metre — and adds the mortar and cost breakdowns on top so you have a complete order list in one pass.

How to Use

  1. Pick your unit system. Metric (m, m²) or Imperial (ft, ft²) — all calculations update instantly when you switch.
  2. Enter wall dimensions. Wall length, wall height, and wall thickness (4.5", 9" or 13.5" for the most common cases).
  3. Pick a brick size preset. Modular, UK Standard, US Standard, Australian, German, or Custom if your brick doesn't match a preset.

Examples

Example 1 — A simple garden wall. A 10 m long, 1.8 m high, 4.5" thick garden wall using UK standard bricks. Gross area: 18 m². No openings. With 5% waste, the calculator gives you about 945 bricks, 6 bags of cement, 0.55 m³ of sand — and a cost figure based on the prices you enter.

Example 2 — A house external wall. A 12 m long, 3 m high, 9" thick wall with two windows (1.2×1.2 m) and one door (0.9×2.1 m). Gross area: 36 m². Deductions: 2 × 1.44 + 1.89 = 4.77 m². Net area: 31.23 m². With 10% waste, you need roughly 3,440 bricks, 22 bags of cement and 1.8 m³ of sand for a 1:5 mortar mix.

Example 3 — A complex elevation. A 25 m long, 6 m high wall with eight windows, two doors, and a decorative Flemish bond pattern. Flemish bond adds about 8% more bricks than stretcher bond, so the calculator's base count is adjusted automatically. With 12% waste and the openings deducted, you typically end up with 8,500 to 9,000 bricks and 55 to 60 bags of cement.

Example 4 — Pointing-only repair. Switch the mix ratio to 1:3 (pointing mix), enter the wall area of just the joints, and the calculator gives you the cement and sand for repointing an existing wall without re-counting the bricks themselves.

Example 5 — Comparing two brick standards. Run the calculation with US Modular (194×92×57) and then again with UK Standard (215×102.5×65). Frequently Asked Questions

How many bricks do I need per square metre of wall?
A standard modular brick (194×92×57 mm) laid with a 10 mm mortar joint covers about 200×100 mm of wall face, giving roughly 50 bricks per square metre of single-brick (half-brick, 100 mm thick) wall. For a full-brick (200 mm) wall, double that to about 100 bricks per m². The exact number depends on your brick size, joint thickness and waste allowance — use the calculator above for a precise figure.
What is the difference between modular and non-modular brick sizes?
Modular bricks are sized so the brick plus one mortar joint equals a round module — typically 200×100×100 mm in the metric system or 8×4×4 inches in the imperial system. Non-modular bricks (such as UK standard 215×102.5×65 mm) do not follow a clean module, and their nominal dimensions include the joint. The calculator handles both — pick a preset or enter custom dimensions.
How much mortar do I need per 1000 bricks?
For modular bricks with 10 mm joints, roughly 0.25 to 0.30 m³ of wet mortar is needed per 1000 bricks. Using a 1:6 cement-sand mix, that works out to about 1.5 to 1.8 bags of cement and 0.3 m³ of sand. For a 1:4 mix, increase cement to about 2.0 to 2.5 bags. Always add 10% to the net figure for site waste.
What waste factor should I add?
A 5% allowance is the standard minimum for experienced bricklayers on straightforward walls. Use 7 to 10% for walls with many cuts (corners, openings, arches) or for less experienced crews. For complex elevations, decorative bonds, or reclaimed bricks, allow 12 to 15%. The waste factor covers breakage in transit, cutting loss at corners, and a small reserve for the inevitable drop-and-shatter.
Do I need to subtract doors and windows from the wall area?
Yes — a standard 0.9×2.1 m door removes about 1.9 m² of wall area, and a 1.2×1.2 m window removes about 1.4 m². Enter each opening's count, width and height, and the calculator automatically subtracts them from the gross wall area before counting bricks. The savings are usually 10 to 20 bricks per opening.
What mortar mix ratio should I use for brickwork?
For general internal load-bearing brickwork, a 1:6 cement-sand mix is standard. For external walls and walls exposed to rain, a 1:5 or 1:4 mix is recommended. For pointing, waterproofing and below-ground work, use 1:3 with a waterproofing admixture. IS 2250 and BS EN 998-2 provide detailed guidance based on exposure and unit strength.
How accurate is this brick calculator?
The wall-area method used here is accurate to within 3 to 5% for most walls when the brick size, joint thickness and waste factor are entered correctly. The main sources of error are unusual bond patterns (English and Flemish bonds add 5 to 15% more bricks than stretcher bond), irregular wall shapes, and under-estimating waste. For very complex elevations, estimate each wall section separately.
Can I calculate bricks for a half-brick (4.5 inch) partition wall?
Yes — set the wall thickness to 4.5 inches (or 100 mm) and the calculator computes the number of bricks for a single-wythe partition. A half-brick wall uses about 50 modular bricks per m², half the number of a full-brick wall. Make sure your waste factor accounts for the additional cuts at openings, which run higher proportionally on thin walls.
How is the cost estimate calculated?
The cost is calculated as: (bricks × price per brick) + (cement bags × price per bag) + (sand m³ × price per m³ of sand). What is the standard brick size in my country?
India (BIS standard) uses 190×90×90 mm modular bricks. The UK uses 215×102.5×65 mm. The US modular brick is 194×92×57 mm. Australia uses 230×110×76 mm. Germany uses 240×115×71 mm. Can I use this for concrete blocks instead of bricks?
The calculator is designed for clay bricks and the math assumes a 200×100 mm face. For concrete blocks (typically 400×200 mm or 600×200 mm), the per-m² count drops to about 12.5 blocks per m² for a 400 mm block, and the mortar volume changes because of the larger face area.
