About Fencing Material Calculator

A fence is a deceptively big material list. The drawing shows a straight line on the property map, but that line turns into posts every eight feet, panels and rails between them, concrete below every post, hinges and pins at every gate, and hardware on every corner — and it all has to arrive together or the crew stops. The classic mistake is counting the fence as "length in feet" and forgetting that each post is a hole, a bag of concrete and a week of settling.

How to Use

  1. Choose the fence style. Wood privacy, picket, chain-link or vinyl — each has its own material math.
  2. Enter the total run length. Measure each straight section with a wheel or from the survey and add them together.
  3. Set post spacing. 6–8 ft for wood, 10 ft for chain-link, tighter for windy or heavy sites.
  4. Enter height and picket/panel sizes. Picket width and gap drive the picket count; panel width drives panel count.
  5. Add gates and corners. Every gate takes extra posts and a hardware set; corners add a brace.
  6. Set post depth and concrete. 24–30 in typical, and choose 1 or 2 bags per post for your soil.
  7. Add waste. 7 percent covers warped boards and cuts.

Examples

Example 1 — Wood privacy fence. A 100 ft run, 6 ft panels, 8 ft spacing, 6 ft tall: 14 posts, 17 panels, 3 rails/section × 17 sections = 51 rail lengths, and 14–28 bags of concrete.

Example 2 — Picket fence. A 60 ft run with 4-inch pickets at 2-inch gaps, 8 ft spacing, 2 rails: 9 posts, 60×12 ÷ 6 = 120 pickets, 18 rail lengths, 9–18 bags of concrete.

Example 3 — Chain-link. A 200 ft run, 10 ft spacing, 6 ft height: 21 posts, 2 rolls of 100 ft fabric, 21 post caps, and tension wire for top and bottom.

Example 4 — With a gate. The 100 ft wood run plus one 4 ft gate: 14 posts becomes 15, panels stay 17, and the gate adds its hinge/pin set and a latch.

Example 5 — Metric garden. A 30 m run at 1.8 m posts: 30 ÷ 1.8 ≈ 17 plus end = 18 posts, about 26 bags of 40 kg concrete at 1.5 per post, with 20 m of rails in 2.4 m stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many fence posts do I need?
Divide the fence length by the post spacing and add one for the corner or starting post. A 100 ft fence at 8 ft spacing needs 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5, rounded up to 13, plus one more for the end → about 14 posts. Add extra posts for every gate and corner.
How far apart should fence posts be?
Wood privacy fences typically space posts 6 to 8 feet apart. Chain-link fences use 10-foot post spacing, and heavy gates or windy sites go tighter — 6 feet or less. The calculator uses your spacing to count posts across the run.
How many fence panels do I need?
Divide the fence length by the panel width and round up. A 100 ft run with 6 ft panels needs 100 ÷ 6 ≈ 17 panels. Pre-made wood panels are usually 6 or 8 feet wide, and the calculator lets you set the panel width to match your product.
How many pickets do I need for a picket fence?
Divide the fence length by the sum of the picket width plus the gap. With 4-inch pickets and a 2-inch gap (6 inches per pair), a 60 ft fence needs 60×12 ÷ 6 = 120 pickets. The calculator runs this math from your picket size and spacing.
How many bags of concrete do I need per fence post?
For a standard 4-inch post set 24–30 inches deep, budget one 50 lb (40 kg) bag of fast-setting concrete per post. In loose soil or taller fences use two. The calculator multiplies your posts by the bags-per-post figure you choose.
How deep should a fence post be set?
Set posts at least one-third of their above-ground height, or 24–30 inches for a 6-foot fence, whichever is deeper. In frost zones the hole must extend below the frost line to avoid frost heave lifting the fence.
How many rails does a fence need?
A privacy fence usually uses two or three horizontal rails between posts, depending on height. A 6-foot fence typically takes three rails per section. The calculator counts the rails from your rails-per-section setting and converts them to board lengths.
How do I account for gates and corners?
Each gate adds two gate posts, and each corner typically needs an extra brace post. Enter the number of gates and corners in the calculator, and it adds the posts, hardware and hinge/pin sets to your material list.
How much does it cost to install a fence?
Material runs roughly $15–45 per linear foot for wood and $10–30 for chain-link before labour. The calculator builds a material budget from your posts, panels, concrete and hardware, and you add local prices per item.
Is the fence calculator for wood, chain-link and vinyl?
Yes. Wood mode counts panels and rails; picket mode counts pickets; chain-link mode counts fabric rolls by length and post spacing; vinyl mode reuses panel counts with vinyl-specific hardware. The posts and concrete math is shared across all of them.
How do I measure my fence line?
Walk the run with a measuring wheel or use the property line on a survey. Measure each straight run separately, add them, and add a little for corners and undulations — the calculator works on total length and your spacing.
What waste should I add to fencing material?
Add 5–10 percent for damaged pieces, cuts at corners and gates, and board waste. Wood fencing especially needs a small surplus because warped or split pickets get set aside during install. The calculator defaults to 7 percent.
