About Cement Calculator

Ordering cement for a plaster or screed job usually comes down to one practical question: how many bags for this area? The answer depends on four things — the area, the thickness, the cement-to-sand ratio and the size of the bag — and while the arithmetic is simple, getting it wrong means a mid-job run to the supplier or a bag too many left in the yard.

How to Use

  1. Choose the mode. Slab for concrete floors, plaster for wall and ceiling coats, screed for floor bedding.
  2. Enter the length and width. The unit selector applies to both; the area appears in square feet automatically.
  3. Set the thickness. Use its own unit — 0.5 inches or 12 mm are typical plaster thicknesses.
  4. Pick the mix ratio. 1:4 for general plaster and screed, 1:3 for richer work, M15 or M20 for concrete slabs.
  5. Select the bag size and waste. 50 kg is standard; 5 percent waste is a sensible default.
  6. Read the bag count. Total bags, bags per square foot and per 100 sq ft all appear instantly.

Examples

Example 1 — Wall plaster. A wall 20 ft by 10 ft plastered 12 mm thick at 1:4 takes about 2.24 m³ dry mortar and roughly 2.4 bags of 50 kg cement — about 0.2 bags per 100 sq ft per millimetre of thickness.

Example 2 — Floor screed. A 150 sq ft floor screeded 1 inch thick at 1:4 needs about 0.32 m³ dry mix and roughly 1.8 bags of cement, with about 0.26 m³ of sand.

Example 3 — Concrete slab. A 100 sq ft slab 4 inches thick (about 0.31 m³) at M15 takes about 2 bags of 50 kg cement, with sand and coarse aggregate from the ratio.

Example 4 — Checking a quote. A contractor quotes 15 bags for a 500 sq ft interior. At 12 mm and 1:4 the calculator gives about 12 bags, so the difference flags an unusually thick or wastage-heavy estimate worth questioning.

Example 5 — Bulk order. Plaster the whole ground floor of 900 sq ft at 12 mm, 1:4. The total is about 21 bags of cement — order 24 to round to full pallets and allow for waste.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I work out the bags of cement per square foot?
Multiply the area by the thickness to get the wet volume, convert to dry mortar volume using a dry factor, then divide by the cement-sand ratio and by the volume of one bag. For 100 sq ft at 12 mm thick with a 1:4 mortar you need roughly one 50 kg bag; the calculator does this for any area and ratio.
What does a cement: sand ratio like 1:4 mean?
It is one part cement to four parts sand by volume, the way mortar and screed are measured on site. A 1:3 mix is rich and strong, 1:4 is the most common all-purpose ratio, and 1:5 or 1:6 are leaner and cheaper mixes for lower-stress work.
What is the difference between concrete and mortar in this tool?
Concrete contains coarse aggregate (stone) and uses a dry factor of about 1.54, while mortar and screed are cement and sand only and use a lower dry factor of about 1.33. The calculator switches between slab mode (M5 to M25) and plaster-screed mode (1:3 to 1:6) automatically.
Why is the dry volume higher than the wet volume?
The wet mortar you measure in the thickness is the finished state, but the dry cement and sand contain air and shrink when water is added. A dry factor of about 1.33 for mortar and 1.54 for concrete compensates for this so you order enough dry material.
What is a typical plaster thickness?
Interior walls are commonly plastered at 12 mm (about half an inch) in one or two coats, exteriors at 20 mm (about 0.8 inches), and tile-backing beds at 6 mm. The calculator accepts the thickness in inches, millimetres, centimetres or metres.
How much area will one bag of cement plaster?
At 12 mm thick with a 1:4 mix, one 50 kg bag covers roughly 100 sq ft. At 6 mm it covers about double, and with a thinner 1:6 mix a bag goes a little further because the sand carries more volume.
What is screed and how thick is it?
Screed is the flat cement-sand layer laid over a floor slab before tiles or flooring. It is normally 25 to 40 mm thick at a ratio of 1:4 or 1:5. Thicker screeds and richer ratios need more cement per square foot.
Should I order extra cement?
Yes. Add a small waste allowance, typically 5 percent, to cover mixing losses, spillage and uneven surfaces. The calculator includes an adjustable waste field so the bag count reflects what you actually take to site.
Can I use inches and feet?
Yes. Length and width accept metres, centimetres, millimetres, feet, inches and yards, and the thickness has its own unit selector. The area is always shown in square feet so the per-square-foot figure is easy to read.
Is the estimate accurate enough to order from?
It uses the standard dry factors, ratios and bag volumes used by builders. Confirm the ratio and thickness with your engineer or the spec, and round up to whole bags, before ordering.
