How to Use

  1. Pick the unit system. Feet/inches for US-style 4×8 sheet estimates or metres for 1200 mm metric boards.
  2. Enter room length, width and wall height. The tool adds both lengths of wall, the two width walls and the ceiling automatically.
  3. Subtract openings. Add up the total door and window areas (roughly 20 sq ft per door, 12–15 sq ft per window) and enter the sum.

Examples

Example 1 — Standard bedroom. A 12×10 ft room with 8 ft walls: walls are 2×(12+10)×8 = 352 sq ft, ceiling 120 sq ft. Subtract a 20 sq ft door and two 15 sq ft windows. Net ≈ 422 sq ft → about 14 sheets of 4×8, ~425 screws, ~70 ft of tape and ~28 gallons of compound.

Example 2 — Tall ceiling living room. A 20×16 ft room with 10 ft walls: walls 2×(20+16)×10 = 720 sq ft plus 320 sq ft ceiling, minus 35 sq ft openings. About 32 sheets of 4×10 board keeps horizontal joints to a minimum.

Example 3 — Bathroom wet area. A 7×5 ft bathroom with 8 ft walls and a tub: net ~180 sq ft of drywall. With the wet-area switch on, the report recommends moisture-resistant board for the surround and notes standard board for the remainder.

Example 4 — Direct area, shed. A 240 sq ft wall run at 9 ft with a 30 sq ft door and window: net 210 sq ft → 7 sheets of 4×8 and roughly 210 screws with 20 ft of corner bead.

How many drywall sheets do I need for a room?
Add the wall area (perimeter × wall height) to the ceiling area (length × width), subtract doors and windows, then divide by the sheet area. A 12×10 ft room with 8 ft walls has 352 sq ft of walls plus 120 sq ft of ceiling, and after 40 sq ft of openings needs roughly 14 sheets of 4×8 ft board.
What is the standard drywall sheet size?
4×8 ft (32 sq ft) is the most common. Taller walls use 4×10, 4×12 or even 4×14 ft sheets to reduce horizontal joints. In metric regions the standard is 1200×2400 mm (2.88 m²), 1200×2700 mm and 1200×3000 mm boards.
How many screws go into each drywall sheet?
Fasteners are spaced 16 inches on centre in the field and 8 inches at edges and seams. A 4×8 ft sheet set vertically against studs 16 inches apart takes about 32 screws; using the standard pattern it is common to budget roughly 1 screw per square foot of board.
How much joint compound do I need per sheet?
A typical job uses about 2 gallons of all-purpose compound per 4×8 ft sheet for the tape, fill and finish coats. Lightweight compound and prefilled fasteners can push that toward 1.5 gallons, while heavy hand finishing and deep repair jobs take more.
How many rolls of joint tape do I need?
One 500-ft roll of paper tape finishes roughly 30–40 sheets of 4×8 board, depending on how many joints each sheet creates. The calculator estimates tape by counting the linear feet of seams between sheets and at inside corners.
Do I deduct doors and windows from the drywall area?
Yes. Door and window openings should be subtracted from the gross wall area, but because cut pieces rarely fill an entire board, estimators only deduct about half the opening area and add 10 percent waste. The calculator lets you enter the opening area directly.
Which drywall thickness should I use?

How much waste should I add to drywall?
