About Plywood / Timber Calculator

Wood confuses budgets twice: once when you count sheets instead of square footage, and again when the lumber yard quotes board feet while your drawing thinks in studs. A floor is never "22 sheets" until you divide the floor area by the sheet, a wall is a stud count plus plates plus the clever extras at corners and openings, and neither matches the price until you multiply by a real cost per piece.

How to Use

  1. Pick the mode. Sheeting for surfaces (floors, roofs, walls, decks) or Framing for studs, joists and rafters.
  2. In sheeting mode: Enter length and width, choose the sheet size, set the waste allowance, and read the sheet count plus board feet.
  3. In framing mode: Enter the length to frame and the spacing (16 in / 400 mm, 24 in / 600 mm, or custom).
  4. Choose the member. Wall studs, floor joists, rafters or a custom member with its own size in 2×4, 2×6, 2×8, 2×10, 4×4 or metric timber.
  5. Add plates and extras. Toggle plates as multiples of framing length and add studs for corners and openings.

Examples

Example 1 — Floor sheathing. A 24×12 ft floor at 4×8 sheets: 288 sq ft ÷ 32 = 9 sheets + 10% waste ≈ 10 sheets of 3/4-inch plywood.

Example 2 — Wall studs. A 16 ft wall of 2×4 studs at 16-inch spacing: (16×12)÷16 + 1 = 13 studs, plus 2 plates (2×16 ft) and 2 corner + 2 opening studs ≈ 17 studs and 32 plate feet.

Example 3 — Deck joists. A 10 ft deep, 16 ft wide deck at 16-inch spacing: (16×12)÷16 + 1 = 13 joists of 10 ft, plus 2 rim joists = 15 pieces ≈ 150 linear ft.

Example 4 — Board feet on hardwood. 20 planks of 1×6×8 ft oak: each is 1×6×8 ÷ 144 = 3.33 BF → 66.7 BF total, priced per BF.

Example 5 — Roof sheathing. A 20×30 ft roof plane (600 sq ft) with diagonal sheathing: 600 ÷ 32 × 1.15 ≈ 22 sheets, the extra 15 percent covering the diagonal waste.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sheets of plywood do I need?
Divide the total surface area by the area of one sheet, then add waste. A 4×8 ft sheet is 32 sq ft. A 24×12 ft floor (288 sq ft) needs 288 ÷ 32 = 9 sheets, plus about 10 percent waste for cuts and layout → roughly 10 sheets.
How do I calculate framing studs for a wall?
Divide the wall length by the stud spacing and add one for the final stud. A 16 ft wall with 16-inch studs needs 12 studs on layout, plus plates, headers and extra studs at corners and openings. The calculator lets you add those extras explicitly.
What is a board foot?
A board foot is 1 foot long × 1 foot wide × 1 inch thick — 144 cubic inches. It is the unit for buying hardwood and rough timber. A 2×4 that is 8 ft long contains 2×4 inches × 12 inches per foot × 8 ft ÷ 144 = 5.33 board feet.
How do I convert lumber price per sheet or per piece to cost?
Multiply the number of items by the price per item. The calculator sums sheets and framing members with the cost you enter per sheet and per piece, so you see the whole material budget in one line.
What thickness plywood do I need for a subfloor?
3/4-inch (18–19 mm) is standard for residential subfloors to span 16-inch or 24-inch joists without bounce. 1/2-inch is used for some wall sheathing and 3/8-inch for light roof sheathing, while 5/8-inch is common on roofs and high-traffic floors.
How much waste should I add to plywood?
Add about 10 percent for standard rectangular layouts. Roofs, floors with diagonal sheathing, and walls full of openings need more — up to 20 percent. The calculator defaults to 10 percent and lets you raise it for complex shapes.
How many studs are in a wall corner or at openings?
Each corner typically takes 2–3 studs, and each opening adds jack, king and header studs. For planning, add 10–20 percent to your layout stud count — the calculator has a dedicated "extra studs at corners & openings" field.
What is the difference between 2x4 and 2x6 framing?
2x6 framing (actually 1.5×5.5 inches) allows more insulation in the cavity and slightly stouter walls, while 2x4 (1.5×3.5 inches) is lighter and standard for non-thermal walls. Cost differs per linear foot, so frame worth the lumber bill.
How do I compute the timber for a deck?
Count joists by dividing deck span by spacing (adding one), then add the rim joists and beams. Panels above give the decking sheets. Enter each member count in the calculator or use the framing members mode with your own lengths.
Is the calculator useful for a whole house frame?
