How to Use

  1. Pick the input mode. Wall measurements for new masonry, or direct volume/area for repointing and repairs.
  2. Enter wall length, height and thickness. The mortar volume is derived from the wall volume using your mortar-percent setting.
  3. Choose the mortar type. Type N for general above-grade walls, Type S for load-bearing and below-grade, Type O for repointing historic masonry, Type M for heavy concrete foundations.

Examples

Example 1 — House wall. A 30×8×0.66 ft wall (30×8×8-in) with 25% mortar = 39.6 cu ft of dry mortar. Type N 1:1:6 gives about 1.4 bags of cement, 100 lb of lime and 0.9 cu yd of sand.

Example 2 — Retaining wall. A 4-inch, 20×6 ft wall in Type S (1:0.5:4): ~4 cu ft of mortar ≈ 0.9 bags of cement, 45 lb lime and 0.2 m³ sand, strong enough for lateral soil pressure.

Example 3 — Repointing a chimney. Repointing 400 sq ft of brick at 3/8-inch joint needs roughly 1.3 cu ft of lime-rich Type O per 100 sq ft — about 5 cu ft total for the chimney, batched in small lime putty mixes.

Example 4 — Block wall metric. A 6 m × 2.5 m × 0.2 m block wall with 25% mortar = 0.75 m³ dry mortar; on 1:1:6 that is ~2.2 bags of 50 kg cement, ~55 kg lime and ~0.6 m³ sand.

How do I calculate the mortar needed for a brick wall?
Estimate the mortar volume as a percentage of the finished wall volume, typically 20–25 percent for common 4-to-9-inch brickwork. A 10×8 ft wall at 4 inches thick holds 26.7 cu ft total, of which about 6.7 cu ft is mortar — enough for roughly 15 bags of 50 kg cement when mixed 1:4 with sand and lime.
What are the different mortar types and when do I use each?
Type S (2,500 psi) is the strongest common mix, used for load-bearing walls and below-grade masonry. Type N (750 psi) is the general-purpose mix for above-grade exterior walls. Type O (350 psi) is for non-load-bearing interior work, and Type M (2,500 psi) for heavy loads such as foundations and retaining walls.
What does the mortar ratio 1:1:6 mean?
The three numbers are cement : lime : sand by volume. A 1:1:6 mix is one part Portland cement, one part lime and six parts sand. More lime makes the mortar softer and more workable, while more cement gives higher strength but a harder, stiffer mortar that can crack in older brickwork.
How much mortar does one 50 kg bag of cement make?
A 50 kg bag of Portland cement holds about 0.0347 cubic metres. Mixed 1:4 with sand it yields roughly 0.13 cubic metres of mortar by the standard dry-volume factor, which coats roughly 55–60 sq ft of 4-inch wall brickwork — or about 80 brick units.
How many bricks can be laid with 1 bag of cement?
Using a 1:4 mortar mix, one 50 kg bag of cement batches enough for roughly 500–600 standard bricks, since each brick uses 0.3 to 0.5 kg of cement distributed through the joints. The exact number depends on joint thickness and brick size.
Why is dry volume more than the net mortar volume?
The cement, lime and sand contain air voids that vanish when water is added. A dry-volume factor of about 1.25 (for the ratio parts alone) gives the loose materials needed to produce the visible wet volume of mortar, similar to the 1.54 factor used for concrete.
Can I repoint with the same mix as a new wall?
Repointing should match the original mortar as closely as possible — lime-rich historic masonry should never be repointed with a hard Portland mix, which traps moisture and cracks the brick. Use the lime-heavy Type O or a lime putty mix for old stone and brick.
How much sand do I need for a mortar job?
