About Square Footage Calculator

Square footage is the number almost every construction and real estate decision rests on — material orders, contractor bids, property valuations and tax assessments all start from it. The problem is that most calculators only handle a perfect rectangle, while real rooms are L-shaped, circular, angled or trapezoidal. Forcing those into a rectangle either over- or under-states the area, and the error flows straight into the budget.

Square Footage Calculator models the actual geometry of each room and separates the three numbers that matter: floor area (for flooring and $/sq-ft pricing), wall area (for paint, drywall and wallpaper), and material area with a waste factor (for what you actually buy). How to Use

  1. Pick a room shape. Rectangle, square, L-shape, circle, triangle or trapezoid — the input fields update to match.
  2. Enter a room name and unit. Use the unit you measured in; the tool converts to square feet automatically.
  3. Fill in the dimensions. Length and width for rectangles, side for squares, large and notch dimensions for L-shapes, diameter for circles, base and height for triangles, and two bases plus height for trapezoids.
  4. Add wall height (optional). This unlocks the wall area column for paint and drywall takeoffs.
  5. Set waste % and rate (optional). Waste covers cut-loss; rate drives the cost estimate per square foot.
  6. Add the room. Repeat for every space in the project to build the full takeoff.

Examples

Example 1 — Rectangular bedroom. Shape rectangle, 12 ft by 10 ft, wall height 8 ft. Floor area is 120 sq ft; wall area is 352 sq ft. Add a 10% waste factor at $4.50/sq ft to see the flooring material cost.

Example 2 — L-shaped living room. Large footprint 16 x 12 plus a 8 x 6 notch. The tool returns 240 sq ft of floor area by summing both rectangles, with wall area from the combined outline.

Example 3 — Circular entry. Diameter 10 ft gives about 78.5 sq ft of floor using pi x (diameter/2) squared — handy for round foyers and silos.

Example 4 — Mixed-unit plan. Measure the kitchen in meters and the hallway in feet; choose the unit per room and the project total still sums correctly in square feet.

Example 5 — Full takeoff. Add every room across an apartment, set a waste factor and a supplier rate, then export the CSV to hand to the flooring contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the square footage of a room?
Measure the length and width of the room in feet and multiply them. A 12 ft by 10 ft room is 120 square feet. This calculator does that multiplication for you and, unlike most tools, also handles L-shaped, circular, triangular and trapezoidal rooms where a single rectangle is not accurate.
How do I find the square footage of an L-shaped room?
Split the L into two rectangles, calculate each, and add them. This tool models an L as the large footprint plus the notch, so you enter the large length and width and the notch length and width, and it returns the combined floor area automatically.
What is the difference between floor area and wall area?
Floor area is the flat surface you walk on (length x width). Wall area is the vertical surface you paint or cover, equal to the perimeter times the ceiling height. A room can have 120 sq ft of floor but 360 sq ft of wall if the ceiling is 9 ft high. The calculator reports both separately because flooring and painting are priced differently.
What is a waste factor and why add it?
Materials like tile, hardwood and carpet lose area to cuts, patterns and mistakes. A waste factor of 5-10% is typical for carpet and vinyl; 10-15% for tile and diagonal layouts. The calculator adds the waste percentage to the floor area to tell you how much material to actually buy, while still showing the true floor area.
Can I enter measurements in inches, meters or yards?
Yes. Choose the unit you measured in — feet, inches, yards, meters or centimeters — and the tool converts everything to square feet internally so rooms measured in different units still sum correctly into one project total.
How is the cost estimate calculated?
Multiply the material area (floor area plus waste) by your rate per square foot. Enter the price your supplier quotes per installed square foot and the calculator returns a total material estimate for each room and for the whole project.
Does this compute Gross Living Area (GLA)?
It computes measured floor area from the dimensions you enter. Whether that equals GLA depends on what you include: appraisers count only finished, above-grade, heated living space and exclude garages, unfinished basements and open porches. Measure only the qualifying spaces to approximate GLA.
What shapes are supported?
Rectangle, square, L-shape, circle, triangle and trapezoid. Each uses the correct geometric formula: rectangle is length x width, circle is pi x (diameter/2) squared, triangle is half base x height, and trapezoid is half (base1 + base2) x height.
Can I estimate multiple rooms at once?
Yes. Add as many rooms as you need, each with its own shape, dimensions, wall height, waste and rate. The tool keeps a running project total of floor area, wall area, material area and estimated cost, and you can export the whole list.
How do I export the results?
