Example – Ningbo to Rotterdam: An importer wants the transit time from Ningbo (CNNGB) to Rotterdam (NLRTM). The distance is about 9,600 km (5,185 nm). At 18 knots the sailing time is roughly 12 days; with a 3-day delay allowance the estimated total voyage is about 15 days.

Example – Los Angeles to Busan: Los Angeles (USLAX) to Busan (KRPUS) is about 9,900 km (5,345 nm), about 12.4 days of sailing at 18 knots. The tool makes it easy to compare this with alternative routings.

What is transit time in shipping?
Transit time is the time a vessel takes to move cargo from the load port to the discharge port. It is normally expressed in days and excludes time spent at the ports themselves. This tool estimates transit time from distance and vessel speed.
How is transit time calculated?
The tool estimates the great-circle distance between the two ports, converts it to nautical miles, and divides by the vessel speed (nautical miles per hour) to get the sailing time. A delay allowance for ports and canals is added to give an estimated total voyage time.
What speed should I use?
Container vessels typically average 16–22 knots depending on the service and fuel price. Use the actual average speed of the vessel for the most accurate estimate. Slower steaming saves fuel but increases transit time.
Why is the real transit time longer?
Ships follow shipping lanes, avoid weather and traffic, and often call at multiple ports or transit canals such as Suez and Panama. Port congestion and transhipment also add days, so treat the estimate as a guideline and add buffer.
What is the difference between transit time and lead time?
Transit time is just the sea voyage. Total lead time also includes pre-carriage to the port, port operations (stuffing, customs, vessel loading), discharge, customs clearance and final delivery. For a full delivery promise, add these separately.
