The smallest budget leak in construction is the quiet one: material that is ordered, paid for, and never makes it into the building. Examples

Example 1 - Tiles. A 400 sq ft floor needs 10% more for cutting: order 440 sq ft plus a box for breakage at install.

Example 2 - Cement. A pour needs 100 bags at 5% wastage: order 105 bags, and mind the tail between trucks.

Example 3 - Steel. 1,200 kg of bar with 7% cutting loss means ordering about 1,284 kg (rounding to full bars adds more).

Example 4 - Paint. 20 litres of theoretical coverage at 12% means buying 23 litres - often that is the difference between one and two buckets of a colour.

Example 5 - Bricks. 3,000 bricks at 8% breakage means 3,240 - order a pallet's worth more and reuse the overage in the site wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is construction material wastage?
Wastage is the material lost to cutting, breakage, spillage, theft or measurement error during construction. Common allowances are 3-5% for cement, 8-10% for bricks, 10% for tiles, 5-8% for steel, 10-15% for paint and up to 5% for aggregates.
Why not just add 10% to everything?
Because wastage varies hugely by material. Over-ordering tiles and bricks leaves costly surplus you cannot return; under-ordering cement and paint delays the work. Setting a realistic rate per material balances cost against risk.
What is a typical tile wastage allowance?
10% is the standard for floors and walls, rising to 15-20% for diagonal layouts, patterned designs, large formats and rooms with many cut edges. Your layout determines the real number more than the tile itself.
How much extra paint should I order?
Around 10-15% over the calculated coverage, plus the fact that each new paint requires priming. The calculator applies your paint rate while allowing the wastage to be adjusted for ceilings, texture and dark-to-light colour changes.
Do steel and cement waste too?
Yes. Steel wastes about 5-8% on site through cutting losses, offcuts and bar bending; cement wastes 3-5% through spillage, moisture, leftover tail and measurement. These percentages look small but matter on repeat pours.
What is the formula?
Order quantity = required quantity x (1 + wastage%/100). For example, 100 bags of cement at 5% means ordering 105 bags. The calculator also reports the wastage amount in the natural unit of each material.
Where does wastage matter most?
High-value or long-lead items: tiles, imported stone, steel, and materials ordered far ahead. Wastage percentages are also important where minimum pack sizes force rounding up anyway.
Can I set my own rates?

How accurate is this?
