About Demolition Cost Calculator

Demolition is the first real cost of any remodel, and it is easy to under-budget the debris. The Demolition Cost Calculator estimates tear-out from area and scope — strip-out, full gut or structural — then sizes the debris in cubic yards and prices haul-away, with an optional hazardous-materials line for asbestos or lead abatement.

Pick a scope to load realistic per-square-foot and debris factors, adjust to your site, and export a clean teardown estimate to pair with your rebuild budget.

Features

  • Scope presets: Strip-out, full gut, structural.
  • Per-ft² labor: Rate scales with how much comes down.
  • Debris volume: Cubic yards from area × factor.
  • Haul-away: Disposal priced per cubic yard.
  • Hazardous: Optional abatement line.
  • Total split: Labor, debris, abatement at a glance.
  • Report & export: Copy or download as text, CSV or JSON.
  • Learning guide: Scope, debris and disposal explained.

How to Use

  1. Enter area. Square footage to demolish.
  2. Pick scope. Strip-out / full gut / structural sets defaults.
  3. Check debris. Cubic yards auto-fills; edit if known.
  4. Set disposal. Cost per cubic yard for your landfill.
  5. Toggle hazardous. Add abatement cost if needed.
  6. Read total. Labor + debris + abatement.
  7. Export. Copy or download.

Examples

Example 1 — Strip-out. 500 ft² strip-out: $3/ft² labor = $1,500; debris 150 cu yd × $40 = $6,000; total ~$7,500.

Example 2 — Full gut. 500 ft² full gut: $6/ft² = $3,000; debris 300 cu yd × $40 = $12,000; ~$15,000.

Example 3 — Structural. 300 ft² at $12/ft² = $3,600; debris 300 cu yd × $45 = $13,500; ~$17,100.

Example 4 — Hazardous. Add $4,000 abatement to Example 2 → ~$19,000.

Example 5 — Dumpster. 300 cu yd ≈ two 30-yd dumpsters; rental could be a separate line.

Benefits

  • Right scope: Strip-out vs gut vs structural priced correctly.
  • Debris honest: Cubic yards sized so you don’t under-order dumpsters.
  • Hazards visible: Abatement shown separately, never hidden.
  • Rebuild pairing: Clean teardown number to add to the rebuild.
  • Private: No account, nothing uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does demolition cost per square foot?
Interior strip-out runs ~$2–4/ft², a full gut ~$4–8/ft², and structural/concrete demolition ~$8–15/ft². The rate rises with how much structure comes down.
How many cubic yards of debris?
Roughly 0.3 cu yd/ft² for a strip-out, 0.6 for a full gut, and ~1.0 for structural work. Multiply your area by the factor, then size the dumpster to that volume.
What about hazardous materials?
Asbestos, lead paint and mold require licensed abatement before demolition and add thousands. Toggle the hazardous line and set a realistic abatement cost.
Is haul-away included?
Disposal is usually billed per cubic yard at the landfill plus dumpster rental/haul. We price debris by the cubic yard; add a dumpster line if you rent one separately.
Do I need permits?
Often yes — especially for structural or load-bearing work and for public-right-of-way dumpster placement. Confirm with your local authority.
What is "full gut" vs "strip-out"?
Strip-out removes finishes (cabinets, fixtures, drywall, flooring) but keeps structure. Full gut removes everything to the studs; structural also cuts framing.
Is my data stored?
No. Every calculation runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded, saved or logged.
