What is a GFCI/RCD?
A residual current device measures the imbalance between live and neutral. Any leakage to earth trips it - protecting people rather than just the cable. The same device is called GFCI in the US and RCD in Europe.
What do the ratings mean?
The mA rating is the nominal residual current (IΔn). A 30 mA RCD must trip at or below 30 mA; it operates fastest around 5x that value, near 150 mA for a 30 mA unit.
How fast must an RCD trip?
For general-purpose (non-delayed) types, IEC 60364 requires tripping within 0.3 s, and faster types within 0.04 s, with the actual trip time shrinking as the residual current grows toward 5x IΔn.
What is a type AC vs A vs B?
Type AC trips on sinusoidal AC leakage. Type A also covers pulsating DC leakage (common with electronics). Type B covers smooth DC - EV charging and similar modern loads.
What is a time-delay (S) RCD?
An S-type (selective) RCD introduces a deliberate delay so the downstream unit trips first. It is used for fire-protection and selectivity schemes, not for personal protection circuits.
How is the hazard level judged?
Leakage under ~0.5x IΔn is usually tolerated. Between 0.5x and 1x the device may or may not trip. Above 1x it must trip; the margin shows how close the circuit is to nuisance or required operation.
