How to Use

  1. Paste your codes. One per line. Add a comma or a tab followed by the product description if you have it — the comparison against chapter meaning is where most real errors surface.

Example 1 — The wrong-country code. A product master built from Chinese supplier data carries ten-digit codes throughout, but the company imports into the European Union where codes are eight digits. Every row is flagged for digit count. The fix is not to trim two digits arbitrarily — it is to take the first six, which are internationally valid, and derive the correct EU seventh and eighth digits from TARIC.

Example 2 — The plausible typo. A code entered as 8741 instead of 8471 still looks like a machinery code and passes any format check. Decoded, chapter 87 returns "vehicles other than railway rolling stock" against a product description reading "laptop computer". The mismatch between chapter meaning and description is what exposes it, which is exactly why pasting descriptions alongside the codes matters.

Example 3 — The bulk placeholder. Four hundred SKUs across furniture, textiles and electronics all carry the same code, applied during an ERP migration when the field was mandatory and nobody had the real values. What does this tool actually convert?
It takes tariff codes and returns what each level of the code means: the section, the chapter and, where the heading is one of the well-established provisions in the built-in dictionary, the heading description too. It also validates the code structurally — checking the chapter exists, the digit count is plausible for a real national tariff, and the formatting is consistent. It is built for volume, so you can paste an entire column from a product master rather than looking codes up one at a time.
Will it give me the full official description for every code?
No, and it says so on every row where it cannot. Chapter descriptions are complete for all 97 chapters. Heading descriptions are covered for a curated dictionary of common trade provisions, not for all of the roughly 1,200 headings, and six-digit subheading text is not included at all. Where the tool has no heading text it returns the chapter meaning and marks the row for verification with a direct link to the official tariff. That is a deliberate choice — a plausible-sounding wrong description is more dangerous than an honest gap.
Why is bulk validation more useful than single lookups?
Because errors in product masters cluster and hide. A file of two thousand SKUs typically contains codes with the wrong digit count copied from a supplier in another country, codes with transposed digits that happen to still look valid, chapter 77 or 98 codes that are not real classifications, blank or placeholder values, and the same product carrying two different codes in different rows. None of those are visible one lookup at a time, and all of them surface immediately when the whole column is checked at once.
What digit counts should I expect?
Six digits is the international subheading, identical in every country. National tariffs then extend it: the European Union and United Kingdom use eight digits, the United States and India use ten, and others vary between eight and twelve. An odd digit count such as seven or nine is almost always a transcription error. A four-digit code is a heading, not a complete classification, and is not usable on a declaration.
My supplier gave me a ten-digit code. Can I use it?
Only its first six digits. Beyond the six-digit subheading, every country adds its own digits for its own tariff, statistical and licensing purposes, and they are not comparable. A Chinese supplier’s ten-digit code and a United States ten-digit code for the same product will usually differ after digit six. Take the six, then derive your own national extension from your destination country’s tariff. This tool truncates and flags where that applies.
Why does it flag chapter 77 and chapter 98?
Chapter 77 is reserved for possible future use in the Harmonized System and contains no goods, so any code beginning 77 is an error. Chapters 98 and 99 sit outside the harmonised nomenclature and are used by individual countries for special classifications — United States chapter 98 covers goods returned and special provisions, and chapter 99 is used for temporary measures such as additional tariffs. Those codes may be legitimate in a national context but they are not standard HS classifications, so the tool marks them for attention rather than treating them as normal.
What counts as a duplicate worth reviewing?
Two things, and they are opposite problems. The same code appearing many times is usually fine and expected. What matters is when the same product description carries different codes across rows, which suggests inconsistent classification, or when very different products share one code, which often means a default or placeholder code was applied in bulk and never revisited. Does a structurally valid code mean the classification is correct?
No, and this is the most important limitation to understand. Validation here is structural only — it confirms the code could exist and tells you what its chapter covers. It cannot know whether that code is right for your goods, because classification depends on material, function, processing and the legal notes.
