Example – Shanghai to Rotterdam: A forwarder compares Shanghai (CNSHA) to Rotterdam (NLRTM). The great-circle distance is about 9,650 km (5,210 nm). At 18 knots that is roughly 12 days of sailing, before canal and port delays. The tool shows this in seconds.

Example – Los Angeles to Singapore: Los Angeles (USLAX) to Singapore (SGSIN) is about 14,120 km (7,620 nm), about 17.6 days at 18 knots, highlighting why transpacific + transhipment routes are common.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the shipping distance calculated?
The calculator uses the great-circle distance between the two ports’ coordinates, converted to nautical miles and kilometres. Great-circle distance is the shortest path on a sphere and is a good approximation, though actual routes may be longer due to coastlines, canals and shipping lanes.
What is a nautical mile?
A nautical mile (nm) is 1,852 metres, equal to one minute of latitude. It is the standard unit for sea and air navigation. One nautical mile is about 1.15 statute miles or 1.852 km.
How is sailing time estimated?
Estimated sailing time is the great-circle distance divided by the average vessel speed, plus an allowance for typical port and canal delays. Container vessels typically steam at 16–22 knots; this tool lets you adjust the speed to match your vessel.
Why might the real route be longer?
Ships follow established shipping lanes, avoid hazards and weather, and may transit canals such as Suez or Panama, which adds distance. Straits, coastlines and seasonal conditions also affect the actual path, so treat the figure as an estimate.
