About Roofing Cost Calculator

A new roof is sold by the square (100 ft² of surface), and pitch, material and tear-off all move the number fast. The Roofing Cost Calculator converts your footprint area into actual roof area using a pitch factor, splits the job into material, tear-off and labour per square, and adds wastage so the quote is complete.

Pick a material to load realistic per-square defaults, adjust to your market, and export a line-item roofing estimate you can hand a roofer or use to compare bids.

Features

  • Square math: Footprint × pitch factor ÷ 100 = squares.
  • Materials: Shingle, metal, tile, slate presets with editable per-square price.
  • Tear-off: Remove old roof, per square or none.
  • Labour: Per square, editable to your region.
  • Waste: 5–20% for hips, valleys and cuts.
  • Total split: Material, tear-off, labour at a glance.
  • Report & export: Copy or download as text, CSV or JSON.
  • Learning guide: Pitch, squares, materials and tear-off explained.

How to Use

  1. Enter footprint area. Building footprint sq ft (plan view).
  2. Pick pitch. Flat to 12/12; the factor scales surface area.
  3. Choose material. Preset price loads, but you can edit.
  4. Set tear-off. Yes to remove old roof, with rate per sq.
  5. Enter labour. Per square for your area.
  6. Add waste. 10% standard.
  7. Read totals. Squares, material, tear-off, labour.
  8. Export. Copy or download.

Examples

Example 1 — Architectural shingle. 1,800 ft² footprint, 6/12 pitch (×1.118 = 2,012 ft²), 20.1 squares, $150/sq material = $3,015, tear-off $90/sq = $1,809, labour $140/sq = $2,814; ~$7,638.

Example 2 — Metal, no tear-off. Same area, $300/sq material = $6,030, labour $160/sq = $3,216; ~$9,246.

Example 3 — Steep slate. 12/12 pitch (×1.41), $800/sq material + $200/sq labour on 25.4 squares = ~$25,400.

Example 4 — Waste. 10% on 20 squares adds 2 squares of material (~$300).

Example 5 — Two layers tear-off. Double tear-off rate raises removal cost ~60%.

Benefits

  • Right unit: Works in roofing squares, the real billing unit.
  • Pitch honest: Surface area grows with steepness, not just footprint.
  • Material compare: Swap shingle vs metal vs tile in one click.
  • Tear-off separate: See removal cost clearly.
  • Waste built: No short-ordering materials.
  • Private: No account, nothing uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a "square" in roofing?
One roofing square = 100 sq ft of roof surface. Contractors price material and labour per square, so we convert your roof area into squares (area ÷ 100) before costing.
How does pitch affect cost?
Steeper roofs have more surface and are slower/safer to work. A 6/12 pitch adds ~12% surface vs flat; 12/12 adds ~41%. The calculator applies a pitch multiplier to footprint area.
What does tear-off cost?
Removing old roofing (tear-off) runs about $1–$3 per sq ft depending on layers and access. It is billed per square and added before new material.
How much does material cost per square?
Asphalt 3-tab ~$80–$120/sq, architectural shingles $120–$180, metal $250–$400, concrete tile $350–$550, slate $600–$1,000+. The calculator uses mid-range defaults you can edit.
Do I need underlayment and ventilation?
Yes — synthetic underlayment, ice & water shield and ridge vents are typically bundled into the labour/material line. The calculator folds them into the per-square material price.
Is waste included?
A 10% waste factor covers hips, valleys and cuts. Complex roofs need more; the calculator lets you set 5–20%.
Is my data stored?
No. Every calculation runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded, saved or logged.
