Examples

Example - 40 ft of 4 in sewer. At the 1/8 in/ft minimum, the far end of the line sits 5 in lower than the start. Raise it to 1/4 in/ft and the drop becomes 10 in - the invert elevation changes by that much at the wall cleanout.

What slope does a drain pipe need?
Small pipe (2.5 in and under) needs at least 1/4 in of fall per foot. Pipe 3-6 in can run at 1/8 in/ft, and large building drains at 1/16 in/ft. Adjust per the adopted code.
How do I measure the fall?
Fall is the vertical drop between the upstream and downstream ends. For a 20 ft run at 1/4 in/ft, the total fall is 5 inches - 20 x 0.25.
Is steeper always better?
No. Extreme slope lets water outrun solids. Gentle code-minimum slopes keep solids suspended and the line self-scouring. Steeper than ~too much invites water to leave scum behind.
How do I express the slope?
As inches of fall per foot (0.25), as a percent (2.08% for 1/4 in/ft), or as a ratio (1 in 48). This tool converts between all three.
