About Water Usage Calculator (Household / Commercial)

Water planning starts with a number - how many gallons does this household or building actually use a day? That number drives softener sizing, filtration capacity, rainwater tanks, well pumps and water bills.

Water Usage Calculator builds a daily, monthly and annual estimate from occupants, building type and fixture activity so every downstream size has a defensible starting point.

Features

  • Residential & commercial: Per-capita baselines for each building type.
  • Fixture breakdown: Toilets, showers, laundry, dishwasher, faucets.
  • Live update: Daily, monthly and annual totals while you type.
  • Dual units: Gallons and litres shown together.
  • Export: Text, CSV or JSON report.

How to Use

  1. Pick the building type - household or commercial.
  2. Enter occupants and fixture activity.
  3. Read the daily total - monthly and annual follow automatically.
  4. Export the result to feed into other sizing tools.

Examples

Example 1. A family of four with normal fixture use lands around 240-280 gallons per day - roughly 8,500 gallons a month.

Example 2. A 20-person office at the 18-gallon baseline adds about 360 gallons daily - enough to size a modest commercial softener or filtration point of entry.

Benefits

  • Real baseline: A defensible gallons-per-day number.
  • Feeds other tools: Softener, filter, tank and pump sizes all start here.
  • Dual units: Gallons and litres together.
  • Live results: No button presses or page reloads.
  • Free and private: No uploads, no logging.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is daily water use estimated?
A per-person baseline for the building type is multiplied by the number of occupants, then fixture activity (toilets, showers, laundry, dishwasher, faucets) is added on top. Each fixture contributes its flow rate times its daily use.
Residential vs commercial?
Residential presets assume around 65 gallons per person per day. Offices, retail, restaurants, hotels and industrial spaces each carry a different per-capita baseline reflecting how water is actually used there.
Why are showers and toilets the big items?
They fire multiple times a day and each cycle draws a full flow. A 2 GPM shower used 15 minutes a day is 30 gallons, and a toilet at 1.6 gallons per flush easily beats that with a few flushes.
What is peak vs average demand?
This calculator returns average daily, monthly and annual totals. Peak (instantaneous) demand happens when several fixtures run at once and is what supply piping is sized on - a separate fixture-unit calculation handles that.
How accurate is this?
It is a planning estimate built on standard per-capita and fixture values. Real bills are the ground truth - use this to size storage, softeners, filtration and rainwater systems, then verify with measured use.
