How is stormwater runoff estimated?
The rational method multiplies the catchment area by the rainfall intensity and a runoff coefficient: Q = C x i x A. The coefficient says how much of the rain runs off versus soaking in.
What is a runoff coefficient?
It is the fraction of rainfall that becomes surface runoff. Roofs are 0.9-1.0, paving about 0.7-0.9, gravel 0.6, and lawn 0.1-0.3 where much of the rain infiltrates.
What is design rainfall intensity?
The inches-per-hour depth for a chosen return period (e.g., a 10-year, 15-minute storm). Local IDF curves supply the number for your location and storm duration.
How big should a downspout be?
A 2x3 in downspout handles roughly 600 square feet of roof at common intensities; a 3x4 in about 1200. The calculator’s pipe-size check is a Manning-based cross-check.
