Examples

Example 1. 3/4 in Type L copper has a 0.785 in bore. PEX-A 3/4 carries only 0.671 in, so the drop-in that holds the flow is 1 in PEX-A (0.873 in bore).

Example 2. 1 in PVC 40 (1.049 in bore) roughly matches 1 in copper M (1.055 in bore) - essentially even.

Example 3. Replacing 1/2 in copper L (0.545 in) with PVC: 1/2 in PVC (0.622 in) is already larger - a clean swap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a 3/4 size differ between materials?
Nominal sizes describe the outer footprint, not the bore. PEX, copper and PVC each leave a different inner diameter for water at the same nominal label, so conversions must compare bores, not names.
How is an equivalent chosen?
The calculator finds the smallest nominal size of the new material whose internal bore at least equals the old bore - the replacement carries the same flow at the same velocity.
Is PEX to copper one-to-one?
No. PEX bores are smaller than copper at the same nominal size, so a PEX line needs a step up (or a bore check) to equal Type M copper - the calculator shows exactly which.
Metric or imperial?
This reference works in inches (CTS sizes). Bores are also shown in mm, and you can enter the size by its standard label.
Does this include pressure rating?
No - pressure comes from each material's rating and joining system. This tool only matches hydraulic size.
Count fittings?
No. Fittings, valves and total friction decide final pressure; this conversion matches steady-flow bore only.
