Frequently Asked Questions

What does this calculator do?
It sizes the gas pipe for a supply run using the longest length, total appliance load in CFH, specific gravity and inlet pressure. The result is the smallest pipe that moves the load without excessive drop.
Natural gas or propane?
The calculator targets natural gas at a specific gravity of 0.60. Propane is heavier (1.50) and needs smaller pipe or a different table - adjust specific gravity and use a propane capacity chart.
What is the longest run?
The longest actual path from the meter to the furthest appliance, including fittings as equivalent feet. Tables are built for worst-case runs, so sizing at the longest run covers every shorter branch.
Why is inlet pressure important?
Most appliances need 7 inches water column (about 1/4 psi) at their inlet. A 0.5 psi supply has margin for drop; a low supply leaves less room for friction, so the pipe grows.
Is this a substitute for a licensed fitter?
No - it is a planning aid. A qualified installer must verify against local code, the appliance data plates and the actual pipe schedule before work starts.
