How is softener capacity calculated?
Daily water use times hardness gives daily grains demand. Multiply by the regeneration interval plus reserve days, and you have the required capacity. Iron adds grains because it consumes resin.
What is a grain of hardness?
One grain per gallon (gpg) is 17.1 mg/L (ppm) of calcium carbonate. Typical water runs 5-15 gpg; anything above about 7 gpg is usually worth softening.
How does iron affect the size?
Iron also exchanges onto the resin. Rule of thumb: each 1 mg/L of iron adds about 4-5 grains per gallon to the effective hardness, and often requires a resin cleaner to protect the media.
Why does regeneration interval matter?
A softener regenerates on a timer or at a metered volume - typically every 5-10 days. The resin must hold all the hardness accumulated between regenerations, plus reserve, so the interval multiplies the daily demand.
What do the standard sizes mean?
Softeners are sold by grain capacity - 24,000, 32,000, 40,000, 48,000 grains and up. Pick the smallest standard size at or above your computed requirement; that is the tank and resin volume you need.
