What is a drainage fixture unit?
A DFU is a unit of plumbing-load that estimates how much a fixture drains. A private 1.6-gallon toilet is 3 DFU, a shower 2, a lavatory 1. Add the fixture units on a branch to find its pipe load.
How is DWV pipe size chosen?
Codes provide tables of maximum DFU for each pipe size in a given context (horizontal branch, stack, building drain). The smallest size whose capacity covers your load is selected, and the slope must meet the minimum for that size.
Why does the same pipe carry more in a stack?
A vertical stack uses gravity and falling water momentum to move waste, so a 3 in stack can carry far more DFU than a 3 in horizontal branch of the same slope.
What is the minimum drain size?
Most codes start at 1.25 in and require at least 2 in for a toilet connection. Minimum slopes range from 1/4 in per foot for small pipe to 1/16 in per foot for large pipe.
