What does a schedule number mean?
It is a rough wall-thickness series. Higher schedules have thicker walls for the same nominal size, so the outside diameter stays constant while the bore shrinks and the pressure rating grows.
Use outside or inside diameter?
Inside - the bore carries the flow. This lookup shows the internal diameter that the schedule leaves you, which is the number flow and volume tools need.
Does schedule change the OD?
No. Each nominal size has a fixed outside diameter across schedules; the wall gets thicker and the interior smaller as the schedule climbs.
What is schedule 40 vs 80?
Schedule 40 is the everyday service line; schedule 80 has roughly twice the wall in some sizes, a smaller bore, and a higher pressure rating. Choose on the pressure you must hold, not the name.
Are PVC and steel dimensions the same?
The outside diameters align across the nominal range, and PVC schedule walls track the steel series closely. Ratings differ sharply because the materials do.
