How is sewer capacity calculated?
Gravity pipe is sized with Manning’s equation: capacity depends on the wetted area, hydraulic radius, slope, and the material’s roughness coefficient n. Steeper slope and smoother pipe carry more.
What is Manning’s n?
It is the roughness of the pipe wall. Smooth plastic is about 0.011-0.013, concrete about 0.013, and corrugated metal around 0.024. Higher n means more friction and less capacity.
Why does slope matter so much?
Capacity rises with the square root of slope. Doubling the grade increases flow by about 41%. Sewers are laid at the shallowest slope that keeps the line self-scouring.
How do GPM and L/s relate?
One cubic foot per second equals about 449 GPM, 28.3 liters per second, 1699 L/min and 102 m3/h. The tool reports all four so you can match your spec.
