How much heat is in a gallon of hot water?
Each gallon needs about 8.33 BTU per degree Fahrenheit of rise. Raise 50 F water to 140 F and one gallon costs about 750 BTU.
What is the first-hour rating compared to recovery?
First-hour rating counts the stored tank plus what the burner recovers in that hour. Recovery is the burner part; a fast recovery makes a smaller tank feel bigger.
