Frequently Asked Questions

What does the expansion tank do?
Water expands as it heats and has nowhere to go in a sealed loop - the pressure would climb until a relief valve blows. The expansion tank holds that extra volume, so pressure stays under control.
Water or glycol?
Glycol expands more than water at the same temperature and carries more heat. The calculator uses a separate fluid expansion factor for water and a 30% or 50% glycol mix.
What are precharge and fill pressures?
The precharge is the air pressure set in the tank before the system is filled. The fill (or cold) pressure is the operating pressure when the loop is full and cold. The difference sets how much volume the tank accepts before the relief valve opens.
How does accept volume work?
The tank’s usable space is the volume between the precharge and the relief setting. At the precharge the diaphragm covers everything; heat raises pressure into the tank’s air cushion - that cushion is the accept volume.
Is this accurate for closed loops?
Yes - it follows the standard closed-loop method: fluid expansion volume divided by the acceptance fraction, which comes from the absolute pressure swing between precharge and relief.
