Frequently Asked Questions

How do I size a fuse?
Start from the circuit current, count the continuous portion at 125%, then choose the next standard fuse rating at or above that design current. The fuse must pass the load while protecting the cable.
What is the difference between gG and aM fuses?
gG (general purpose) protects cables and general loads and clears low overcurrents. aM (motor) withstands motor starting currents and is matched to a motor protective device; it is designed for protection against short-circuit current.
What standard fuse ratings exist?
IEC gG ratings step through 2, 4, 6, 10, 16, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, 250, 315, 400 A and up. The calculator picks the next rating at or above the required value.
Why is a fuse sized above the running current?
A fuse must carry the working current without aging the element or nuisance-blowing, yet open before the cable is damaged. The headroom covers inrush and tolerances on the load.
How do I match the fuse to the cable?
The fuse rating should not exceed the conductor ampacity (with derating applied). The calculator shows the minimum cable ampacity so you can pick the conductor to match.
Do I use NEC or IEC rules?
