About Gravel / Stone Calculator

Gravel is the unnoticed workhorse of every site: it carries the driveway, drains the patio, builds the base a concrete slab sits on, and gives landscape beds their mulch-free finish. It is also sold in units that confuse most people. The quarry quotes tons, the drawings show cubic yards, the directions say four inches — and none of them match until you run the conversion.

How to Use

  1. Choose the shape. Rectangle for driveways, patios and beds; circle for round areas and fire pits.
  2. Enter the dimensions. Feet, inches, yards or metres — all convert to the same volume beneath.
  3. Set the depth. 2–3 in for decorative mulch-style bedding, 4 in standard for driveways and patio bases, 6–8 in for heavy bases and parking.
  4. Pick the stone type. Crushed stone for bases and driveways, pea gravel or river rock for decoration and drainage channels.
  5. Add compaction (optional). For compacted bases add about 15 percent so the delivered loose stone finishes at the specified depth.
  6. Read the estimate. Cubic yards, cubic metres and cubic feet show immediately, with tons, tonnes and truckloads beneath.

Examples

Example 1 — Driveway. A 40 × 12 ft driveway at 4 inches deep: 40×12×(4/12) = 160 cu ft ≈ 5.9 cu yd. Crushed limestone at 100 lb/cu ft weighs about 8 tons, or about one tandem-axle dump truck.

Example 2 — Patio base. A 16 × 12 ft patio base at 4 inches: 16×12×0.333 = 64 cu ft ≈ 2.4 cu yd ≈ 3.2 tons of 3/4-inch crushed stone with compaction.

Example 3 — Pea gravel bed. A 20 × 6 ft border bed at 3 inches of pea gravel: 20×6×0.25 = 30 cu ft ≈ 1.1 cu yd ≈ 2,850 lb or about 1.4 tons.

Example 4 — Round fire pit. A 5 ft diameter ring filled 6 inches: area π×2.5² ≈ 19.6 sq ft × 0.5 ft = 9.8 cu ft ≈ 980 lb of river rock — close to half a ton.

Example 5 — Checking a quote. A contractor quotes 6 cu yd of stone for a pad. The calculator at the same dimensions says 5.2 cu yd plus 15 percent compaction — the quote is close, and you know it includes waste.

How do I calculate the amount of gravel I need?
Convert the area to a volume by multiplying the length, width and depth, then convert that volume to weight using the gravel's density. A 20×10 ft driveway at 4 inches deep holds about 2.5 cubic yards ≈ 3.4 tons of crushed stone at 100 lb per cubic foot.
How much gravel do I need for a driveway?
A surfaced driveway typically gets 4–6 inches of crushed stone total, usually installed as a graded base course plus a top layer. A 40 ft × 12 ft driveway at 4 inches averages about 6 cubic yards ≈ 8 tons of stone.
How many tons is a cubic yard of gravel?
It depends on the stone. Dry crushed stone weighs about 2,600–2,800 lb (1.3–1.4 tons) per cubic yard; pea gravel and river rock weigh less at around 2,400–2,700 lb, while some wet bank-run aggregate approaches 3,000 lb. The calculator applies the density of the type you select.
What depth of gravel do I need under a shed or patio?
A 3–4 inch compacted stone base is standard under patios, sheds and walkways to spread load and drain water. Heavier loads such as parking areas use 4–6 inches. The calculator lets you set the depth and shows the resulting volume and tonnage.
How deep should a gravel base for concrete be?
For a concrete slab, 4–6 inches of compacted crushed stone is typical, rising to 8 inches on poor-bearing soil. The base must be compacted in lifts and capped with fine stone that screens the slab from uneven point loading.
What is the difference between crushed stone and pea gravel?
Crushed stone has angular, interlocking edges that compact into a firm, stable base, while pea gravel is smooth and rounded, so it moves under load and is used decoratively rather than as a structural base. The calculator has separate presets for both.
How do I convert cubic feet of gravel to tons?
Multiply the volume in cubic feet by the density in pounds per cubic foot, then divide by 2,000. Crushed limestone at 100 lb/cu ft: 1,000 cu ft × 100 = 100,000 lb ÷ 2,000 = 50 tons.
How much area does one ton of gravel cover?
One ton of crushed stone at 100 lb/cu ft is 20 cubic feet, which covers 60 sq ft at 4 inches deep (2,000 ÷ 100 = 20 cu ft ÷ 1/3 ft depth = 60 sq ft). For pea gravel the same ton covers a little more.
Do I add extra gravel for compaction?
Compaction shrinks loose stone by 10–20 percent depending on the aggregate, so order 10–15 percent more than the neat volume when the base is compacted in place. The calculator has a compaction allowance you can set.
Should the gravel be layered?
For driveways the standard is a two-layer approach: coarse 3–4 inch stone as a drainage base, then a finer 3/4-inch crushed stone top that locks together. Single-layer gravel for patios should be well-graded so small particles fill the voids.
How many tons fit in a dump truck?
A standard tandem-axle dump truck hauls about 10–12 tons; larger end dumps carry 20–25 tons. Divide your total by the truck capacity to plan deliveries — the calculator gives your tonnage and an approximate truck count.
