About Tile Calculator (Quantity + Wastage)

Tile estimation looks simple - measure the room, divide by the tile area - but in practice it rarely works out cleanly. Edges need cuts, cuts produce waste, patterns like diagonal and herringbone multiply the waste, and the result is almost always "just a few tiles short" if you order the bare minimum. The Tile Calculator handles all of this: it sums the area of one or many rooms, factors in the layout pattern, adds a wastage percentage, and converts the result into whole boxes with a price estimate.

How to Use

  1. Pick your unit system. Metric (m, m2) or Imperial (ft, ft2) - all calculations update instantly when you switch.
  2. Select a tile size preset. 300x300, 300x600, 450x450, 600x600, 600x1200, or Custom for unusual sizes.
  3. Set the grout joint. 2 mm for rectified porcelain, 3 to 5 mm for ceramic, 4 to 6 mm for natural stone.
  4. Choose a layout pattern. Straight for simple rooms, diagonal for visual interest, herringbone for classic patterns.

Examples

Example 1 - A simple bathroom floor. A 2.4 m x 3 m bathroom with 600x600 mm tiles in a straight lay. Room area: 7.2 m2. Tiles per m2: 2.78. Tiles needed: 20. With 7% waste: 22 tiles. With 4 tiles per box: 6 boxes. At $40 per box: $240. You can complete the job in one day with a single box of spare tiles for future repairs.

Example 2 - An L-shaped kitchen. A 4 m x 3 m main area with a 1.5 m x 1.5 m bump-out, totalling 14.25 m2. With 300x300 mm tiles in a straight lay, you need 158 tiles (11.11 per m2 x 14.25 m2). With 10% waste for the L-shape corners: 174 tiles. At 12 tiles per box: 15 boxes. At $25 per box: $375.

Example 3 - Diagonal hallway. A 1.5 m x 8 m hallway using 600x600 mm tiles laid diagonally. Area: 12 m2. Straight lay would need 34 tiles. Diagonal adds 8% for pattern waste plus 5% for the long narrow shape: 14% total waste. Total tiles: 39. At 4 per box: 10 boxes. At $45 per box: $450.

Example 4 - Herringbone feature wall. A 4 m x 2.4 m living room feature wall using 600x1200 mm tiles in herringbone. Area: 9.6 m2. Tiles per m2: 1.39. Tiles needed: 14. With 15% waste for herringbone: 16 tiles. At 2 per box: 8 boxes. At $80 per box: $640.

Example 5 - Multi-room whole-house job. Three bedrooms (3.5 x 4 m each), two bathrooms (2.5 x 3 m each), a kitchen (4 x 5 m), and a living area (5 x 6 m) - all using 600x600 mm floor tiles. Total area: 42 + 15 + 20 + 30 = 107 m2. Tiles needed at 2.78 per m2: 298. With 7% waste: 319. At 4 per box: 80 boxes. At $40 per box: $3,200 for the entire house.

Example 6 - Comparing tile sizes. Run the same 30 m2 living area calculation twice: once with 600x600 mm tiles (84 tiles, 21 boxes, easier to lay, more grout lines) and once with 600x1200 mm tiles (42 tiles, 21 boxes, faster to lay, fewer grout lines, more expensive per box). The total boxes come out similar but the look and labour differ significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tiles do I need per square metre?
A 600x600 mm tile covers 0.36 m2, giving about 2.78 tiles per m2. A 300x300 mm tile covers 0.09 m2, giving about 11.11 tiles per m2. A 600x1200 mm tile covers 0.72 m2, giving about 1.39 tiles per m2. The exact number depends on your tile size, grout joint and wastage allowance - use the calculator above for a precise figure based on your selected tile.
What wastage percentage should I add for tiles?
For a straight lay in a simple rectangular room, 5 to 7% is usually enough. For diagonal patterns, allow 10 to 15% because every tile at the edge needs a 45-degree cut. Herringbone and other complex patterns need 15 to 20% because of the extra cuts at every tile end. For rooms with many corners, pillars or curved walls, add an extra 5% on top of these base figures.
Why is diagonal laying more wasteful than straight?
In a straight lay, only the tiles along one or two edges of the room need to be cut. In a diagonal lay, every tile along all four edges of the room needs to be cut at 45 degrees, and you get two usable offcuts from each cut instead of one. The cut tiles are also more prone to breakage if the saw slips. Empirically, diagonal laying uses about 15% more tiles than straight laying for the same room.
How are boxes calculated?
Tiles are sold in boxes. The number of tiles per box depends on the tile size - 600x600 mm tiles are usually sold 4 per box (covering 1.44 m2), 300x300 mm tiles 12 per box (1.08 m2), and 600x1200 mm tiles 2 per box (1.44 m2). The calculator divides your total tiles needed by the tiles per box and rounds up to the next full box, so you never run short by half a box.
What is the standard grout joint width?
For ceramic floor tiles, 3 to 5 mm is standard. For rectified porcelain tiles, 2 to 3 mm gives a near-seamless look. For natural stone like marble or granite, 2 to 4 mm is typical. For very large format tiles (above 600x1200), 2 to 3 mm is normal. The grout joint affects the tiles-per-m2 count slightly - the calculator adds your grout width to each tile dimension when computing coverage.
Should I buy extra boxes for repairs?
Yes - even after the wastage allowance, keep at least one unopened box of each tile you use. Tile batches vary in colour and finish, so a box bought later for a repair may not match the original batch exactly. Most suppliers recommend storing 5 to 10% of the original quantity as attic stock for the next 5 to 10 years, because tile lines are frequently discontinued.
Can I calculate tiles for multiple rooms?
Yes - use the "Add room" button to add as many rooms as you need. Each room has its own length, width, optional wastage override and a checkbox for floor vs wall. The calculator sums all room areas, applies per-room wastage, and gives you a single total for the order. You can also remove rooms using the delete button on each row.
How accurate is this tile calculator?
For rectangular rooms with simple layouts, the count is accurate to within 2 to 3% when grout width, tile size and wastage are entered correctly. For L-shaped, U-shaped or rooms with many corners, the actual count is usually 3 to 5% higher than the calculator shows, because corner cuts generate more waste than the simple area calculation allows for. For these complex shapes, consider adding 3% on top of the wastage figure.
What is the difference between per-box and per-m2 pricing?
Per-box pricing is what most retailers advertise - you pay a fixed amount for a box of (usually) 4 tiles. Per-m2 pricing is more common for trade purchases and natural stone, where the price is given for the area covered regardless of how many tiles that is. The calculator supports both: pick "per box" if you see prices listed as "$X per box", or "per m2" if you see prices listed as "$X per square metre".
Do large format tiles need less grout?
Yes - large format tiles (600x1200 mm and above) typically have narrower grout joints (2 to 3 mm) and lower grout consumption per m2 than smaller tiles. However, the installation requires a perfectly level substrate because any unevenness shows as lippage (one tile edge higher than its neighbour). Large format tiles also require modified thinset mortar and often a larger notch trowel (12 mm instead of 10 mm).
What is a PEI rating and does it matter for floor tiles?
PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) rating indicates tile wear resistance. PEI I is wall-only, PEI II is light residential floor, PEI III is all residential areas, PEI IV is light commercial and residential, PEI V is heavy commercial. For a home bathroom or bedroom, PEI III is fine. For a kitchen or entryway, choose PEI IV. For shops and offices, PEI V. The calculator does not factor in PEI rating, but it is an important separate consideration when buying tiles.
