Choose an Incoterms 2020 rule based on transport mode, insurance, export clearance, and delivery responsibility. Compare EXW, FOB, CIF, DAP, DDP and more.

Educational guide only. State the exact named place or port and “Incoterms® 2020” in the contract; verify official ICC guidance.

About Incoterms 2020 Selector & Guide

Incoterms 2020 Selector & Guide helps buyers and sellers compare trade rules based on transport mode, insurance needs, export clearance, and delivery responsibility. Answer a few planning questions to see suitable rules and a concise explanation of cost and risk allocation.

Incoterms are not a substitute for a sales contract, insurance policy, customs advice, or carrier agreement. State the selected rule, named place or port, and “Incoterms® 2020” clearly in your contract, then obtain professional advice for your transaction.

Features

  • Transport-mode filter: Separate any-mode rules from sea/inland-waterway rules.
  • Responsibility prompts: Consider import clearance, insurance, and delivery point.
  • Rule comparison: Review EXW through DDP in one practical guide.
  • Risk reminder: Highlights that cost and risk do not always transfer at the same moment.
  • Contract wording cue: Encourages a named place/port and the 2020 edition.

How to Use

  1. Select the transport mode and answer responsibility questions.
  2. Review the suggested terms and their high-level delivery allocation.
  3. Choose a named place or port precisely.
  4. Confirm the term with your forwarder, customs advisor, insurer, and contract counsel.

Examples

Example: A seller delivering containerized cargo to a carrier at origin may consider FCA. A seller arranging carriage to a named destination but not import clearance may consider CPT or CIP, depending on insurance requirements.

Benefits

  • Choose more intentionally: Match a term to operations rather than defaulting to familiar acronyms.
  • Reduce disputes: Discuss risk, cost, clearance, and insurance before shipping.
  • Improve contracts: Prompt complete rule-and-place wording.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Incoterms 2020 rules?
They are ICC trade terms that allocate delivery, cost, risk, export/import clearance, and transport responsibilities between seller and buyer. They do not replace a complete sales contract.
Does Incoterms decide title transfer or payment?
No. Title, payment, governing law, and remedies should be addressed separately in the sales contract.
Which terms work for any transport mode?
EXW, FCA, CPT, CIP, DAP, DPU, and DDP can be used for any mode. FAS, FOB, CFR, and CIF are intended for sea or inland waterway transport.
Is FOB correct for container shipments?
FCA is often more suitable for containerized shipments delivered to a carrier or terminal; consult your forwarder and contract requirements.
Does CIF include insurance?
Yes, CIF requires seller-provided cargo insurance at the minimum required level under the rule. CIP has a different insurance expectation; verify the official rule text.
What does DDP mean?
Delivered Duty Paid places broad delivery and import-clearance obligations on the seller. It can be unsuitable if the seller cannot legally act as importer or manage local tax/customs requirements.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is an educational selection guide. Use the current official ICC rules and qualified trade, legal, and customs advice for contracts.
