About Painting Cost Calculator

Paint is sold by the gallon but priced by the room, and labour is the part that surprises people. The Painting Cost Calculator turns paintable area, paint coverage and number of coats into the gallons you must buy, then adds primer, a per-square-foot labour rate and wastage to reach a total.

Whether it is one accent wall or a whole exterior, the tool separates paint cost from labour so you can see which lever moves the number — and rounds the gallon count up so you actually have enough on site.

Features

  • Gallons needed: From area, coverage and coats, rounded up with wastage.
  • Paint cost: Gallons × price per gallon.
  • Primer: Optional separate coat with its own coverage and price.
  • Labour: Per square foot of surface, multiplied by coats.
  • Wastage: 0–20% on paint so the order is realistic.
  • Total split: Paint vs primer vs labour at a glance.
  • Report & export: Copy or download as text, CSV or JSON.
  • Learning guide: Coverage, coats, primer and prep explained.

How to Use

  1. Enter paintable area. Walls plus ceilings in sq ft.

  4. Enter paint price. Per gallon.
  5. Set labour. Painter rate per ft² of surface.
  6. Add wastage. ~10% standard.
  7. Read the total. Gallons, paint, primer and labour appear instantly.
  8. Export. Copy or download.

Examples

Example 1 — One room. 600 ft² walls, 350 cover, 2 coats, $32/gal, $1.5/ft² labour: ~3.4→4 gal paint ($128) + $900 labour = ~$1,060.

Example 2 — With primer. Same area, primer coat at 350 cover $22/gal adds ~1.7→2 gal ($44).

Example 3 — Deep colour. Coverage drops to 280 ft²; gallons rise to ~4.3→5 for two coats.

Example 4 — Exterior. 2,400 ft² at 2 coats, $38/gal, $2/ft² labour = ~14 gal ($532) + $4,800 labour.

Example 5 — Wastage. 10% on 4 gal = buy ~4.4→5 gallons so touch-ups don’t run short.

Benefits

  • Plan the budget: A defensible number before getting quotes.
  • Private: No account, nothing uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many gallons do I need?
Gallons = (paintable area × coats) ÷ coverage per gallon, plus wastage. A 350 sq ft/gallon paint over 1,000 ft² in two coats needs about 5.7 gallons before waste — round up and add 10%.
What coverage should I use?
Flat and matte paints cover ~350–400 ft²/gallon; glossy and deeper colours (especially red/blue) cover less, ~250–300 ft². Primer is usually ~350–400 ft²/gallon.
How much does labour cost?
Painters commonly price by the square foot of surface — often $1–$3/ft² for walls including two coats, more for prep, ceilings, or many cuts. The calculator uses a per-ft² labour rate you set.
Do I need primer?
Bare drywall, stains, dramatic colour changes and glossy-to-flat switches benefit from primer. Add it as a separate coat with its own coverage and price.
Why does wastage matter?
Edges, tray loss, roller soak and touch-ups eat paint. 10% is normal; trim-heavy or colour-shift jobs need more. It keeps the purchase realistic.
Does this include ceilings?
Enter all paintable surface — walls plus ceilings. Ceilings are often a different (cheaper) paint but the same area math. Add them to the total area.
Is my data stored?
No. Every calculation runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded, saved or logged.
