What is pressure drop in a gas line?
Friction against the pipe wall lowers gas pressure along the run. If the drop is too big, the far appliance sees less than the ~7 inches water column (1/4 psi) most equipment needs.
What units does it use?
Results come in inches water column (in w.c.), the plumber’s unit, and psi. The calculator works from flow in CFH, inside pipe diameter, length and equivalent fittings.
How do fittings count?
Each elbow, tee and valve adds an equivalent length of straight pipe. The calculator adds a percent of the measured run - typically 20-30% - so the real path is covered.
Natural gas or propane?
Natural gas at 0.60 specific gravity is the default; propane at 1.50 is heavier and drops more pressure for the same flow. Pick the fuel and the result follows.
What is an acceptable drop?
A total drop of 0.5 inches w.c. on a 7-inch system is the common planning target. Over that, the pipe grows or the inlet pressure rises.
